Portugal is the westernmost country in the continent of Europe, Planet Earth. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the East and South, and Spain to the North and West. The country has been designated, as an area, by humans, although the majority of the population is non-human- just one example of Earth’s thoroughly undemocratic approach. Despite being only two-thirds the size of England, it was the first country to establish a significant empire, and the last to relinquish it. It has, over time, been incorporated and separated from Spain in a myriad of ways. It is currently the only country to have fully legalised the possession of “up to ten days’ worth” of any drug- including cocaine, LSD and heroin. It has a GDP per capita of $23,222, an estimated population of 10.64 million, and the 19th-highest quality of life reading of any country on Planet Earth. Its currency is the Euro.

Portugal is a little gem of a country. People talk about England punching above its weight by running a global power from a tiny island- but move aside Britannia, Portugal is the new king. England may have had an empire, but Portugal thought of it first, and when England gave up and went home, Portugal held on to its colonies for another 50 years. When it finally gave up its last territory, Macau, it took one of the most giant and evil countries in the world to take it back- China. Portugal is one scrappy little country.

Portugal has a great location, right in the sweet spot of the Mediterranean. It’s also grabbed an extra helping of coastline, possibly stolen from Spain, the neighbouring giant. Spain knows better than to reprimand Portugal though, and lies passively on its borders like an exasperated parent. Spain can’t match Portugal’s energy; no-one can.

The key to Portugal’s success is that it has no fear. Most countries know that the legalisation of drugs will reduce the number of drug-related deaths; but they’re all too scared. Even Denmark isn’t as fearless as Portugal. And don’t think that Portugal has only implemented legalisation recently- it’s been going on for ten years. Other countries haven’t taken much notice, because they think that Portugal is tiny and insubstantial. They couldn’t be more wrong.

They also refuse to be lead. Portugal has its own distinct language, Portuguese, which is not hugely similar to Spanish, although they are both Latinate. Sure, Portugal could have just accepted Spain’s language for convenience- but that’s compromise, and Portugal doesn’t ever compromise. They made up their own language, carried on as if nothing had happened, and by God they made it work.

Portugal is really underrated; it’s been passed over in favour of other, more prominent countries. Well, no more. I’m here to tell you now that Portugal is one of the best countries, if not the best country, in the world. I recommend that it be given extra land to match this status- the entire continent of Africa, for example.
